Ahhh The Amateur Nationals.. The premier show of shows that every amateur looks forward to. Fierce competition, making new friends and laying down a few hundred laps. This year this event was under new leadership and despite the heat, we all had to get accustom to the “new program”.
It was indeed a long way to travel from Pennsylvania, but the experience was well worth it. I simply rode two classes on my 85cc machine, the modified and the DTX class.
The first day was so hot weather wise and I was headed to the short track, I am not a big fan of this short track, in fact I have never really liked it. From practice on we struggled with gearing and I was getting frustrated. The heat race I still struggled and our gears were way off, however I did get off the line ok, but missed the direct transfers in both classes only to lay down more laps through semis. The DTX I had a good start and took the win to enter the main, the Mod class, took a different turn all together.. I jumped the line, then restarted on the back row and well, you know how that goes.. I missed the transfer. The DTX main I started on the back row and made a lot of moves towards the front and finished a well 7th place. I had made the most of what I could do.
The second day the TT should show more promise, as I am more of a TT rider over the short track. The track itself is pretty much the same condition every year and I like it. The mod class, had a great start took the lead early and took the win and direct transfer. The DTX , had another great start and another win and transfer. I was pumped and ready for the mains.. I picked outside position and away I went, great starts in both DTX and Mod classes, The DTX had some major crashes and a restart.. I spun the tire out , but held on to finish 3rd. The Mod class.. Another good start, but the some other bikes pulled away from me, so I finished 4th. A good day.
The next day the heat index was so Hot, we didn’t really leave the hotel because it was awful.. AC is what we needed and a pool… So I did both and waited for more racing. Thursday, it was back to the half mile.. UGH!
I had ok starts in both heats, the DTX I finished 4th and headed to the semi, the Mod class I took the win and was happy. The semi I had a decent start to finish 2nd and get a ticket to the show. The main DTX I started from 2nd row, had a good start, kids were falling around me, I checked up a little with 2 laps to go and held on to finish 4th. The Mod class was crazy, everyone looking for the win Got pinched off into the turns but held on, was passed on the inside and tried to make up ground, then someone crashed right into my line and I had no where to go but through him, bike went up in the air and I followed.. I got the wind knocked out of me.. But finished 8th.
Friday would bring half mile again Both classes I did well in the heats for the easy way to the mains.. No semis I placed 3rd in DTX heat and 2nd in Mod heat. The mains, DTX second row start finished 6th and Mod, also finished 6th.
Overall: DTX 3rd and Modified 10th…
Last weekend we went to Timonium .. A little track that we all like. They run a winter series indoors but it’s summer so we were outside. I rode the 7-11 85cc class. The first round of practice the track was perfect, by the second round.. Some holes appeared.. You really couldn’t miss them. The heat race, front row start, battled a bit to land in 5th and did the same in the main event.
Thank you to all my sponsors. Also Have to add, that my Mom and Dad have been so supportive of my racing, in fact, my Mom videotaped me at the Amateur Nationals, or so we thought.. When we watched the half mile race, we wondered why she was cheering for someone else. She taped the wrong rider, I was out front and she was watching someone with similar leathers and yelling at them to pass the rider, little did she know… I already did!!
